Hostel Activities

Our dedicated activities staff offer lots of fun tours and social events, where you can meet up with other travelers and explore the city.

In addition to the regular schedule listed below, different activities are programmed every week, so be sure to check our activities board in the lobby. Also see our event calendar to for other free/low-cost outings in San Francisco.

Movie Nights
Mondays, 8:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Cost: Free!
Relax with a flick and free popcorn in our theater-style TV room.

Bike the Bridge
Tuesdays, 9:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Cost: $18 for bike rental (with $100 deposit); $11.50 for optional ferry ride
Izar takes you on a scenic bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, and a ferry ride back to the city. The first stop is one of our bike rental partners, where we'll pick up bikes and helmets. Then we'll hit the road for a relaxing ride past the Palace of Fine Arts, through the Presidio, and over the iconic Golden Gate Bridge -- an incredible experience for anyone! We'll continue to the bayside town of Sausalito for some lunch by the waterfront, and you'll have the option of taking the ferry back to the city -- it's a mini bay-cruise past Alcatraz with great views of San Francisco the whole way.

Hills of San Francisco Walking Tour
Wednesdays, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Cost: Free!
Join your guide Henry for an extensive walk along the streets and over the hills of some of San Francisco's most scenic neighborhoods. Learn the history and enjoy the views of Russian Hill, Telegraph Hill, Nob Hill, North Beach, and Chinatown. See some of the oldest homes in town as well as Lombard Street, Coit Tower, hidden gardens, stairways and alleys. Bring water, a snack, camera, pen, paper, and a map.

San Francisco Treats
Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Cost: Free!
Meet in the lounge for local food tasting and some good conversation. Taste bread, chocolate, cheeses, and other treats made right here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament 
Wednesdays, 8:30 p.m. 
Cost: $5 includes entry and 5 drink tickets 
Get into the competetive spirit for an epic Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament taking place in different bars in North Beach. Meet new people while battling it out in this old school point and earn points during each round, which takes place at a new bar. The top players from qualifying rounds along with several wild card players will compete at the final bar for a chance to win a bar tab, while other players still have a chance to win restaurant coupons and more! Note: You have be 21 years or older to drink alcohol. 

Dinner at Cafe Franco
Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $3 - $5 for just dinner ; $10 for dinner, salad, and a glass of wine.
On Thursdays, a family-style dinner is served up in Cafe Franco. A great way to fuel up before the pub crawl!

Tri-Hostel Pub Crawl
Thursdays, 7:30 p.m. - midnight
Cost: Pay for your own drinks
Join up with guests from our HI San Francisco City Center and Downtown hostels for our famous tour of local pubs. Three hostels and six bars makes for one memorable evening! (21 and over)

Chinatown Walking Tour
Fridays, 1:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Cost: Free!
Join your fellow hostellers for a trip to one of San Francisco's oldest and most captivating neighborhoods: Chinatown. Though it's only a few blocks away from our HI San Francisco Downtown Hostel, Chinatown is another world unto itself, bustling with shops and buzzing with people. Explore hidden alleyways, sip various Chinese teas, see mysterious historic temples, and visit the famous San Francisco Fortune Cookie Factory. Note: This tour leaves from HI San Francisco City Center.

Tai Chi Social 
Fridays, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. 
Cost: Free! 
Meet in the lounge for a rejuvinating session of Tai Chi and learn a little more about the ancient martial art technique. Light refreshments will be served.

Downtown Walking Tour

This fantastic walking tour with our volunteer, Dave, is pretty fast-paced, so get those walking shoes ready for a historic stroll (or power walk) through San Francisco. Explore the city's most interesting 'hoods, like Downtown, Nob Hill, and the Financial District at a swift and spritely pace. Note: This tour leaves from HI San Francisco Downtown.

Mission District Mixed Bag
Saturdays, 11:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Cost: Pay for your own lunch/drinks
Wanna know where San Franciscans go to escape the fog? On weekends they make a beeline to the Mission, where the chances of it being sunny are high, and where art, culture, and nightlife thrive. Spend your Saturday like a local! We'll have a drink in a beer garden, eat a burrito, and people watch in Dolores Park. We'll also throw in a bit of history, and check out some murals and street art along the way.

Asian Art Museum Tour
First Sunday of the Month, 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. 
Cost: Free 
Join one of our experienced volunteers for a tour of the mesmerizing Asian Art Museum on Larkin Street. Housing one of the largest and diverse artworks all from all over Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, South East Asia and the Himalayas, the museum collection spans 6,000 years of history. See all the marvelouos pieces and learn more about history, culture and beliefs of the Asian people through their art. 

Haight Street Walking Tour 
Sundays, 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 
Cost: Free! 
Explore the home of hippie heaven and learn about the Summer of Love during this fun and interesting walking tour of Haight Street led by one of our local volunteers. See the famous intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets, Jimmy Hendrix's former house and the colorful Victorian houses that are now as much a part of pop culture as the music made out of this area. You'll also get to walk around on your own to browse the interesting stores, including the famous Amoeba Music record store.
